Looking to add some new ideas to your maternity session? The great thing about life as a photographer these days is that we have a huge variety of digital options to help us create more images to add to our galleries – even after the shoot has ended!
Hooray for digital backdrops! They really are a whole lot of fun to play with.
In today’s lesson, you will learn the art of digital compositing with Victoria Burcusel from Lifetime Stories Photography.
A beautiful backlit maternity image is a staple of every gallery … but adding elaborate curtains isn’t always an option because let’s face it, a lot of us are working in small studio spaces and often don’t have the budget or space! Thankfully you can head to most digital backdrop stores or online marketplaces like Etsy to find some really gorgeous options.
Watch this video as Victoria works through an edit from beginning to end of not one but two gorgeous maternity images – one with a couple and one with mum alone.
When you’re working with digital files, choosing the right photo to match is essential! Make sure that you take the time to check the file sizes, resolution and of course, depth of field! The aim of the game is to make the final edit look as realistic as possible so you’ll need to get these things right from the get go.
Colour tone and warmth is another important factor and Victoria gives you tips to help make sure this element of your image is correct before you get started. It just won’t work if your subjects are warm and your digital backdrop is cool!
Once you have the basics right, then it’s time to start the edit! But just how exactly do you get that seamless flow from one image to the next?
If you haven’t yet mastered the art of layer masking, then Victoria will step you through it!
Combining two images like this can be a little painstaking and you will definitely need some patience and a steady hand … but it’s not as hard as it looks and with a little practice, you’ll be creating gorgeous digital edits in no time!
You’ll love the tips and tricks that Victoria explains during this video. How to deal with shadows and focal length issues. How you can manipulate your digital image before you start to make your life easier! Adding haze to blend tricky spots and add that ethereal glow to your image. The options are endless!
