17 Oct cake smash sessions with Emma Baker
There is so much to love about cake smash photography! It’s a genre like no other, that’s for sure. Fun, fast and full of surprises … you’ll have sore cheeks from smiling so much and your studio will look like a tornado has just whipped through. It may not be for the faint hearted, or mess averse, but the final images are worth every blue-icing stained mark on your favourite white rug. We promise!
If you aren’t yet offering cake smash sessions in your business, it’s definitely worth considering! They are a fantastic way of reconnecting with your newborn clients during that first year and a wonderful little cash cow product that you can easily slip into your busy schedule.
That being said, even though these sessions might be over and done with quickly and the editing is generally quite basic, it’s not always all smooth sailing. After all, we are working with those highly unpredictable little people of the world so preparation is key!
This lesson with Melbourne portrait photographer Emma Baker of Aurora Joy Photography talks you through the art of cake smash photography and how to set yourself up for success.
You’ll love looking through the gallery of images Emma shares with you that shows just how creative you can get with this genre of photography. There is so much scope for imagination in the world of cake smashing! Colours, props, themes and more. Emma talks through her favourite suppliers and gives you advice about the best backdrop systems that will make clean up a breeze.
If you were wondering about the technical side of this style of photography, Emma has it covered in this video. There are some important camera specs to understand to make sure that you don’t miss a moment in this fast paced genre and you’ll take away some specific techniques to try.
So what do you do when bub just isn’t into it?
Yes, it’s a thing. Babies that hate cake. It’s not something we can relate to personally (send in the cake!!) but of course, it’s often baby’s first introduction to the world of sugar and sometimes it can all get a bit much. Throw in five enthusiastic family members cheering them on and the bright lights of the studio. Mini meltdowns are not uncommon!
Emma gives you her tips on how to best prepare your little models for their cake smash session. She’s seen it all before and knows how to set everyone up for success. Mum and Dad included!
There is quite a lot to think about! Nap times. Warm up portraits. How to interact with your cake smasher. What type of cakes to source. What other options are there? Emma has lots of great ideas that will help sort out the problems before you even encounter them!
What about pricing?
Even though a cake smash session is over and done with quite fast, there is a lot to think about when considering how to price your products and services. Emma talks through her inclusive pricing plan that allows her to provide all of the necessary props and outfits to ensure that her families receive a personalised session for their baby. She also talks through some helpful marketing tips to help you get more clients through the door!
So if you’re building up the courage to start cake smashing in your studio, or you’re an experienced cake smash photographer who might like a sneak behind the scenes in another studio, this video is for you!
